In any conversation about access to veterinary care, Dr. Michael J. Blackwell’s name is bound to come up. Dr. Blackwell heads the Program for Pet Health Equity at the University of Tennessee, which has created AlignCare, a subsidized OneHealth initiative that helps qualified households afford care for their nonhuman family members.
As income disparity grows along with the cost of care, we can’t afford to ignore the question of how to provide care to populations many of us working in private practices never see. Dr. Blackwell explains how AlignCare works, why "best medicine” is always relative, and how each of us in this field can help just by starting to turn towards this issue instead of turning away.
